GO Day of Service

Posted by Simone Richmond on April 05, 2019

On Feb. 9 and Mar. 9, parishioners, parents, and friends from the church and school community joined GO-St. Luke’s for a Day of Service to support our awesome GO students.

For over twenty years, GO-St. Luke’s was a tutoring program that provided individualized support to public school children throughout New York City. In 2016, we joined forces with GO Project, founded over fifty years ago at Grace Church, in a partnership that formalized and extended our impact. GO shapes the futures of low-income New York City public school children who have fallen behind, by providing critical academic, social and emotional support starting in their early elementary years. During our GO-St. Luke’s Saturday morning program, friends and supporters were invited to join us to provide additional support to our classrooms.

After a brief orientation, Day of Service volunteers were placed into elementary school classrooms. A professional teacher modeled a lesson or activity to the class of no more than 16 students. Our Day of Service volunteer tutors then continued to work with small groups of students on the lessons, providing individualized attention, and helping the students to thrive.

Keep an eye out for more GO-St. Luke’s Days of Service, which will be held this coming November through March! It’s a great way to be of service and learn more about GO, and learn what it would feel like to serve as more committed and regular volunteers – and what it would mean to these bright, capable young kids.

Here’s some feedback from one of our stellar parishioner-volunteers, who helped out in March: “The kids are so bright and rambunctious. I learned a lot, and it made me really happy to participate. Having gotten a sense of how the morning is structured and of seeing the good work these teachers and students do—well, it is very special indeed.”

It is with a heavy heart that GO-St. Luke’s bids farewell to Bruce Goerlich, Outreach Committee and Vestry member who has been our main volunteer, helping out faithfully week after week, for over twelve years.  Bruce will be retiring from his volunteer position this summer. We are grateful for his years of service and all his good work, ongoing coordination and invaluable perspective. Thank you, Bruce!
