What is an Advent Wreath?
An advent wreath is a circle of four candles, each representing the four Sundays of the Advent Season. Sometimes, a fifth candle is placed in the middle to symbolize Christ and is lit on Christmas Eve. Advent wreaths are one of the ways in which we prepare ourselves for the season of Christmas - for the coming of Christ into our lives. Traditionally wreaths are decorated with greenery, but can also be decorated with pinecones, holly, cranberries, ribbons, flowers, or combinations of all of these.
Each candle represents one of the themes of the season: Faith, Hope, Love, Joy, and the Christ Candle. As you light a new candle each week, contemplate the ways in which these themes are present in your daily life. You might find the following scriptures helpful in these meditations:
Advent 1: Faith
Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him."
Psalm 119:30 "I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws."
Advent 2: Hope
Romans 15:4 "For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."
Psalm 119:114 "You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word."
Advent 3: Love
John 1 4:19 "We love, because He first loved us."
1 Corinthians 13:4-5 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."
Advent 4: Joy
John 15:10-11 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.”
1 Peter 1:8-9 "Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls."
Christmas Eve: Christ
Isaiah 60:1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you."
John 8:12 "Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"
